It matters

It matters, series of laser engraving on paper, aims at revealing the quintessence of the painting’s materiality. For this specific body of work, Claire Deniau has photographed from very close the materiality of her painting process, and more specifically the interplay of textures - a technique she has carefully developed, - where handling the canvas, replaces and complement the brushstroke.

To combine with the photographies, she has painted individual brushstrokes on paper, as for the artist the paint touch is also the quintessence of the act of painting. With digital manipulation she has merged the photography and the brushstroke to create an adequate digital file for the laser engraver. The light brown colour is the result of the laser burning the paper. By digging into the paper, the engraving creates a light depth, which emphasizes the materiality perception. Hence the viewer can experiment the ultimate delicacy of the painting process.
